Tennessee has been a permitless-carry state since July 1, 2022 (HB0786). Practically: any law-abiding adult 21 or older can carry a handgun openly or concealed without a state permit. 18 is the floor if you are active-duty military or honorably discharged. Most folks still get the TN Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit anyway — it is good for reciprocity in 39 other states and clears you through NICS faster on future purchases. Tennessee has no state-level magazine capacity limit, no “assault weapon” ban, no ammunition registration, and no waiting period on long guns.
NFA items follow federal law: ATF Form 4, $200 tax stamp per item, fingerprint cards, photograph, and either a gun trust filing or individual filing. We have filed hundreds of these. e-File support is broader than it used to be and most stamps right now are clearing in 60 to 90 days, depending on volume. Call before you start the process for your first one — getting the trust set up correctly the first time saves a lot of paperwork later.
For shipping out of state, the constraints worth knowing about: California has a roster and a long list of feature restrictions. Massachusetts has a roster of its own plus an “assault weapon” definition that catches a lot of standard configurations. New Jersey caps magazines at 10 rounds and bans suppressors and SBRs entirely. New York SAFE Act restricts pistol grips, threaded barrels, and adjustable stocks on semi-auto rifles. Washington has its own “assault weapon” ban as of 2023. If you are shipping anywhere with restrictions, email us with the model number and your destination state before you order. We would rather sell you a legal alternative than ship something that gets refused at the receiving FFL.
