What counts as a qualifying rifle
- Straight-wall cartridge, .35 caliber or larger — .350 Legend, .360 Buckhammer, .450 Bushmaster, .45-70 Government, .444 Marlin all qualify. Bottlenecked rounds (.308, .30-06, .30-30, 6.5 Creedmoor) do not, whatever the caliber.
- Single shot as manufactured — break actions and dedicated single-shot bolt guns qualify; magazine-fed ARs and repeating bolt/lever guns don't, even loaded with one round.
- Shotgun slugs don't count as straight-wall rifle cartridges for this window.

Is .30-30 a straight-wall cartridge?
No — .30-30 Winchester is a tapered, bottlenecked case and under .35 caliber, so it doesn't qualify for the early window. It remains a classic choice once regular gun season opens.
